Original Dodge Parts

Dodge was founded in 1900 as the Dodge Brothers Company by brothers Horace Elgin Dodge and John Francis. Originally a supplier of parts and assemblies for Detroit-based automakers, the company began making automobiles in 1915. The Dodge Model 30 was marketed as an upscale alternative to the Ford Model T. A reputation for durability and reliability earned the new car maker the spot for second largest sales in the US by 1916. This success would not last. The 1920s death of the Dodge brothers due to disease began a marked decline of the company. By 1925 the carmaker had dropped to fifth place and was sold to the investment company Dillon, Read, & Company for $146 million, the largest cash sale up to that time.

Under the ownership of the investment group, fortunes continued to slide. By 1927, the once popular carmaker was seventh place in sales. The ailing company was sold to the Chrysler Corporation in 1928 and marketed as a mid-priced brand. Over the years the brand grew to include trucks and performance oriented cars. Dodge became well known for trucks, with the Dodge Ram being the most recognized and popular. The 1960’s cemented the company’s reputation as a maker of performance and muscle cars. The Charger, which came with a V8 as standard, featured a fastback roofline, hidden headlamps, and a full-width taillamp panel. Buyers who wanted more power could upgrade to a 426-cubic-inch, 425-hp Hemi V8. Models like the Coronet R/T and Super Bee proved popular as well. The Challenger was introduced in 1970 to compete with the Mustang and Camaro. Although well received by the public, production of the model ended in 1974 with 165,437 sold. A changing market and a coming crisis again marked a decline for Dodge.

The 1973 oil crisis caught Dodge, Chrysler, and American carmakers unprepared. Rising gas prices caused a shift to smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicles. Dodge mainly sold trucks and full-sized passenger cars. With the notable exceptions of the Colt and the Dart, this line up was perceived as gas guzzlers and inefficient. Due to financial difficulties Chrysler was slow to make changes. By 1979 bankruptcy loomed, but a last-ditch effort by Lee Iacocca, the CEO of Chrysler, secured federal loans and guarantees from the Congress. With the infusion of taxpayer money, the almost bankrupt company desperately redesigned and produced the K-cars. This platform and its many derivatives saved the company. The Dodge Caravan, based on a modified K platform, introduced the minivan for the first time and launched a whole new market.

After an unsuccessful merge with Daimler-Benz AG in 1998, a sale to Cerberus Capital Management in 2007, the bailout by US government in 2009, the filing of Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and a buyout by Italian carmaker Fiat, Dodge once again finds itself at a crossroad.
