Adam Opel AG, a subsidiary of Groupe PSA (Stellantis), is a German car manufacturer with headquarters in Rüsselsheim, Hesse, Germany. Founded in 1862 by Adam Opel as a sewing machine maker, the company eventually expanded to the manufacturing of bicycles (1886) and automobiles (1899). By 1914, the company was the largest automobile manufacturer in Germany.

Market expansion continued throughout the 1920’s. The use of mass production assembly lines, the first of its kind for a German car manufacturer, created reduced cost and met a growing demand for automobiles. The company marketed transportation to all classes and not just the wealthy. This tradition continues today. The Opel markets the new Insignia as “The Right Choice For Every Driver”.

Modern production facilities and a 37.5% market share in Germany drew the attention of GM. The American company bought 80% of Opel in 1929. The combination of American capital and German automotive know how propelled Opel to the top of car production in Europe by 1937. World War II changed everything.

Seized by the German government early in the war, the car manufacturer began production of aircraft parts and tanks for the German war effort in 1942. Opel took on more specialized projects for the German military. Company engineers designed intercoolers for the Junker Jumo aircraft engines and the air- oil cooling engines used with 3.6 L trucks. Engineering and production success caught Allied forces attention. Arial bombing of factories began in 1944. By 1945 the company’s Rüsselsheim plant completely stopped production. At the end of World War II, Opel’s plants and factories were just rubble and ruins.

GM was hesitant to take back control of the destroyed automaker but Opel workers were not. These dedicated men and women began immediately to rebuild the Rüsselsheim factory. In 1946 the Opel Blitz truck rolled off the rebuilt assembly line. General Motors finally resumed management of the resurrected company in 1948. By 1954, recovered from the consequences of war, Opel built 167,650 vehicles.

The company presently has eleven manufacturing facilities in six different countries. It has markets in Africa, Asia, Europe (except the United Kingdom), and South America. Opel designed or rebadged vehicles are often sold in the US under the Buick brand. The Buick Regal, Encore, Verano, Lacrosse are either rebadged or share Opel vehicle parts and designs.

GM for a time seemed ready to sell its interest in the German automaker. General Motor’s 2009 bankruptcy and financial problems at Opel lead to the speculation that the two companies might part ways. GM went so far as to offer to sell Adam Opel AG to Magna International Inc. This plan fell through. Recently Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, said Opel was a vital part of GM. American capital and German know how seem poised to propel Opel forward.

Opel has been owned by Groupe PSA (Stellantis) since 2017.
