Jeep, a division of FCA US LLC, is one of the oldest brands of off-road 4x4 vehicles in the world. First built for the US Army during WW II, the rugged machine would become the stuff of myth and legend. Its versatile design and off-road capabilities inspired numerous imitators, most notably the Land Rover. The 4x4 sparked an enthusiastic following both during and after World War II. It remains to this day the favored vehicle of off-road adventures.

In 1940 the US Army sought bids to build a “light reconnaissance vehicle”. Bantam, Willys, and Ford all placed competing bids. However, the template for the Jeep would eventually become a collaborative effort between the three companies. Using designs from Bantam, Willys and Ford quickly created the Ford “Pygmy” and Willys “Quads” prototypes. After some revisions to the basic design, the Willys MB went into production in 1941.

The all-purpose MB proved itself in every area of combat. In combat, they could be fitted with .30 or .50 caliber machine guns. With modification, the vehicle could be used in long range desert patrol, snow plowing, telephone cable laying, saw milling, as firefighting pumpers, field ambulances, and tractors. US and Allied soldiers grew to love the “light reconnaissance vehicle” and nicknamed it, “Jeep”.

The popularity of the Jeep would not end with the close of World War II. Pitched as “The All-Around Farm Work-Horse” and “A Powerhouse on Wheels”, the 4x4 sales were very brisk. It proved to be just as rugged and versatile in peace time as it had been during the war. Today, Jeep offers a wide variety of off-road vehicles.

Jeep Grand Cherokee combines both off-road capability and day to day driving comfort. The 2011 Grand Cherokee won awards for off-road capability, luxury, value, and safety. The Wrangler, easily the most recognized Jeep product, shares many of the same features of it MB ancestors. Most notable is the use of rigid live axles and separate bodies and frames. The vehicle can be driven without doors and has a fold-flat windshield. 2011 models had new and more comfortable interiors that offered greater storage space. The Jeep Wrangler continues Jeep’s strong commitment to off-roading.
