Founded in 1954, SsangYong Motor is the fourth largest South Korean Based automobile company. Created from the merger of Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop and Dongbang Motor Company in 1963, the new company began building jeeps for the US Army in 1964 under the name Hadonghwan Motor Company. 1977 saw another name change to Dong-A Motor. The purchase of the company by the Ssangyong Business Group brought about another name change to SsangYong Motor (SsangYong means double dragon in Korean).

The company began building the four-wheel drive vehicle Korando, in the 1980s. A strategic alliance was formed with Mercedes Benz AG to develop gasoline and diesel engines in the 1990s. 2000 saw an expansion into the SUV market with the Rexton, Kyron, Actyon, Korando and Actyon Sports models. SsangYong Motor also entered the luxury market with the launch of the Chairman, a sedan styled to resemble a 1990s Mercedes-Benz S-Class in 1997. A Chinese company, SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, bought a controlling interest in 2004.

The automobile company suffered a major setback in 2009. A $75.42 million loss would force the company into receivership. Later that year, a worker strike caused production disruption for 77 days. SAIC was also accused of stealing hybrid vehicle technology from SsangYong Motor. The Chinese company denied the theft but they were charged by the South Korean prosecutor's office for violating company regulations and the South Korean law. In December a company turnaround plan was approved by Korean courts. Mahindra & Mahindra Limited acquired the struggling car manufacturer in 2011.

SsangYong Motor has worldwide sales, except in North America. It has factories in South Korea, Russia, and Ukraine. Presently the company produces automobiles and commercial vehicles. Types include SUVs, vans, pickup trucks, luxury cars, trucks, and buses. A new design center was opened at Pyeongtaek. The Korando won the 2012 Northern European race in extremely cold weather. The new Rodius was released in 2013.
